Brian McGuffey
Meet the Artist
I am a self-taught artist currently residing in Todos Santos, BCS, MX. Originally from Alabama, travels have taken me throughout North and Central America and Europe.
Images from my life experiences and childhood are loosely represented in my paintings. Storytelling, children’s books and my Grandmother are all inspirations for conceptualizing imagery and themes. My work can be seen as either light-hearted, thought-provoking, or both simultaneously.
Building of texture and use of color are primary steps in my creative process. Elements for my paintings include several layers of acrylic paint, vinyl composite, oil stick, and a matte, protective polymer on canvas or wood.
In my current body of work, I have created subjects possessing both human and animal characteristics. Inspiration for these works come from such disparate sources as Henry Darger, Crayola® crayons and Hermann Rorschach.
Collectors of my work over the last 15 years, both Ann and Nancy Wilson noticed characteristics of my recent work that resonated with the project they had been working on; a collection of work they felt deserved new and finer interpretations.
They enlisted me to create not only cover art for their new album, ‘Beautiful Broken’, but paintings that offered a visual representations of each song as well.
As we moved through the project together, I was struck at how my life experiences and artwork reflected deeply in the music they were sharing with me.
Working closely with Ann and Nancy was a magical experience, right along with ‘Featured Artist’ for the Carmel International Film Festival, where I was in the company of George Rodrigue (Blue Dog) and Mr. Brainwash, AKA Thierry Guetta. To see more of Brian’s art, click here to view his website.
