Ardis Young
I have been a full time artist for more than ten years splitting my time between Todos Santos and Denver. My time in Todos Santos influences my paintings greatly, I am inspired by the rich culture, nature and beauty of Mexico’s Baja sur region.
I am an abstract painter currently painting with acrylics and incorporating mixed medium
collage and found objects. Also, I enjoy experimenting with encaustic.
I enjoy taking classes at the Art Students League in Denver, studying with Jeff Wenzel, a
contemporary artist; I attended Indiana University, as well as Red Rocks Community College in
Denver and studied with Don Coen, a contemporary painter. I have attended plein aire painting
workshops in Colorado and New Mexico and encaustic painting workshops with Victoria
Eubanks in Denver.
For thirty years, I was a corporate paralegal, retiring thirteen years ago. I visited Todos Santos
shortly thereafter staying for a few months and found a wonderful community of artists. Now I
stay for approximately 6 months over the winter. My subject matter is nature, colors, textures,
shapes, the colors of old rusted objects, peeling walls and structures. I find my time in Todos
Santos inspired by the colors, sounds and landscape of the desert, and I interpret them into my
paintings. Anne Hebebrand has been my mentor and friend for 10+ years, I appreciate her
guidance and support.
“You have to know how to use the accident, how to recognize it, how to control it, and ways to
eliminate it so that the whole surface looks felt and born all at once.”
