Meet the Artist
Mark Gabriel is a multi-media artist whose creative journey reflects a rich tapestry of influences. He began in the underground comics and fanzine scene while performing in punk bands at night, developing a unique artistic voice. Mark earned his Honors Baccalaureate Degree in Illustration from Sheridan College.
His artistic evolution continued through a successful career in film, where he worked as a muralist, concept illustrator, and production designer, enriching his visual storytelling skills and shaping his distinctive style.
At the crossroads of the desert and the sea, Mark captures the vibrant essence of his surroundings in his paintings. His work is characterized by dynamic depictions of deserts and poolside scenes inspired by the Retro Jetset. These compositions invite viewers into a world where nostalgia meets imagination, populated by lively characters that embody the spirit of adventure and leisure.
Mark’s paintings showcase a blend of Socialites, Mythical figures, Ranchero cowboys, and playful animals, all set against backdrops that evoke the allure of sun-soaked landscapes and architecture of another time. Using a palette knife, he creates layered textures, then movement with the bold application of a variety of mediums — ink, mono-printing, chalk, and charcoal — creating multi-dimensional pieces that celebrate light and shadow. His work invites viewers to engage with the drama (stories) woven into each canvas, capturing the essence of a dreamlike reality.
